The Two Dorothy's by Einde The Two Dorothy's by Einde
When I was a kid I was terribly confused about why Dorothy's hair color seemed to change every other book in the series, but it turns out that the most common Oz books were illustrated by either W. W. Denslow or John R. Neil. So this is my take on both of those versions of Dorothy.

To be honest Blond Dorothy is far more fashionable but brunette Dorothy seemed to have more spunk.

Actually since most of the books were illustrated by Neil and only the first one by Denslow, it is generally considered among "Oz-ites" that she's Blond... Ozma on the other hand really is confusing b/c in her first appearance she is described as having golden hair, but in every other one of Neil's artworks she has dark hair... ??? I like the dark-haired Ozma better and she more consistantly has dark hair, which I think may be Baum's appeal to young girls with darker hair b/c all his other girls are definitely blonds, Trot, Betsy, and I think even Dorothy... and while we're "choosing sidekicks" for Dorothy... I guess you never got around to Eureka... her "pink kitten." Yes... she gets turned pink... and stays that way... and Toto is literally described and this is never refuted... he's black.

I like the blonde version just a little better!

I prefer a brunette Dorothy with messy pigtails, but Billina is my favourite sidekick.

Billina had so much sass she was my favorite too.

Both versions are so spunky. I really can't decide which I like more.

Although I favor the blonde version, I always thought Dorothy had plenty of spunk no matter what the hair color!  :-)

a great drawing! thanks for explanation, I would think she' dual for some psychological Freud-style reason. Here Dorothy was illustrated just once

Could be, Dorothy's personality did tend to change from book to book.

this is true :) at the beginning she was more shy, a good, obedient child, wasn't she?

Yes, and later on she gets ridiculously simple-minded. But I think that kinda tends to happen in sequels anyway.

I'm currently working on a pic with Dorothy in it but can't pick which Dorothy she should be based on. [link] (Dorothy on left, Scarecrow on right) I'm leaning towards brown with blue eyes but then John Neill's version shows up far more often... Got links to the reference pics you used? And do you have any advice for a confused artist? lol

Here's link to some pretty nice John R. Neill illustrations of Dorothy [link]

As for advice I'd say just play around with different techniques and styles until you find one you're happiest with. Looking at older illustrations can be very inspiring.

Yokai, thanks, nice drawing btw ^.^ When 99% of people think Dorothy they think Judy Garland. Great to see someone else on this planet knows the truth XD lol
